Sociologist calls on all political forces to form coalition

May 22, 2012 Armenia No Comments

Sociologist Aharon Adibekyan calls on all the political forces to enter the coalition and work together for the benefit of Armenia.

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, he said the Armenian Revolutionary Federation-Dashnaktsutyun (ARF-D) would better forget the offence it voiced in the address of the ruling coalition and enter the coalition.

“It would be good if Heritage too forms the coalition. But the Armenian National Congress is self-isolated and would hardly share power with “criminal state”. They are radical opposition,” the sociologist said.

Aharon Adibekyan expressed conviction that the Prosperous Armenia party (PAP) will form a coalition as it managed to gather many votes thanks to its opposition stance and being in the coalition as well.

“If it [PAP] pulls out from the coalition it will lose its votes. If it remains, it will keep them. In case all the forces enter the coalition the political electorate will be clearly outlined, each person will know his/her work,” Adibekyan said.

The sociologist said the opposition dreams today of extremely bad condition in the country which will cause a big wave of complaint and bring them to power. “It is one of the worst manifestations of misanthropy – addressed to the own people,” Adibekyan said.

The differences between two major opposition factions that first emerged a month ago have been growing day by day, receiving fresh and thicker colorings.

While “skirmishes” continue between Armenia’s largest opposition alliance, Armenian National Congress (ANC) led by ex-president Levon Ter-Petrosyan, and the Heritage party led by Ter-Petrosyan’s first foreign minister, US-born politician Raffi Hovannisian, a call is made by the latter’s parliamentary faction head for the two sides to stop because what is happening now is “very bad”.

But before that, as a political analyst, Heritage’s Stepan Safaryan said that ANC leader Ter-Petrosyan “had thrown down the gauntlet to the opposition forces outside the ANC, but one day he will see that he is quite alone.”

Armenian National Congress (ANC) Rally: Same Place, New answers?

April 7, 2011 Armenia, Top News No Comments

Oppositionists believe that the rally of the Armenian National Congress (ANC) to be held on Friday, at Matenadaran (Mesrop Mashtots Institute of Ancient Manuscripts) “will be as crowded as it was on March 17,” during which “people will get the answers to all their questions.”

According to ANC coordinator Levon Zurabyan, on April 8, ANC leader Levon Ter-Petrosyan will state when they will present an ultimatum to authorities if their demands are not met.

During the March 17 rally, when ANC demonstrators entered Liberty Square for the first time since 2008, three main demands were presented – “to release all political prisoners; permission to hold opposition rallies in Liberty Square, an order to reveal all those who are responsible for March 1-2, 2008 murders.”

Armenians Express Their Dissatisfaction By Leaving The Country

February 23, 2011 Armenia No Comments

On February 18, Heritage Party offered the opposition parties – Armenian National Congress (HAK), and Armenian Revolutionary Federation-Dashnaktsutyun – (ARFD) to develop a joint action plan and mobilize the opposition field.

Chairman of Heritage faction Stepan Safaryan says the opposition should not follow the example of the coalition government and create a pyramid; rather, it should attempt to draw public attention to the issues raised by opposition forces.

“Egypt has set an excellent example for us. In Egypt, opposition forces united and made a real coup d’état without a leader,” said Safaryan.

According to Stepan Safaryan the opposition should elaborate such an agenda that will be able to address all public concerns.

Armenia Would Recognize NKR Independence In Response To Pressure In The Negotiation Process

October 27, 2010 Armenia No Comments

Oppositionist party, Heritage, insists that the Armenian Parliament should pass a law on the Republic of Nagorno Karabakh, and the voting on the draft law will be held by the end of the four-day session of the parliament.

Heritage party has submitted the draft law on recognizing the independence of a republic Armenia has de-facto interstate relations with. Interdepartmental agreements are signed between all ministries of Armenia and NKR, Armenia is providing Karabakh with an interstate loan which makes almost half of Karabakh’s state budget. Nonetheless, Armenia has not recognized Karabakh’s independence out of caution as not to harm the negotiation process within the framework of OSCE Minsk Group.

Will Yerkir Media Be Closed?

October 11, 2010 Armenia No Comments

Yerkir Media TV Channel will not be closed down as it is doing something that others do not, member of the Armenian Revolutionary Federation’s Bureau (Dashnaktsutyun, ARF-D) Spartak Seyranyan said at a press conference today, asked whether its closure was possible given the upcoming competition for airing licenses.

“Yerkir Media declined from airing programs ‘acceptable’ for the airing market,” said he, adding that the channel has put the accent on reverberating national and state issues in its programs.

A group of members of Karabakh Liberation Organization attempted to picket outside Baku Business Center against the Socialist International’s regional meeting on CIS, Caucasus and Black Sea.

Nikol Aghbalyan Student Union of the ARF -Dashnaktsutyun today held a protest march to the OSCE Office in Yerevan against the statement of the President of the OSCE Minsk Group’s Co-Chair countries and provocative actions of Azerbaijan..

The marchers handed a letter to the Head of the Military-Political Department, Gregor Mikhailski, expressing their indignation over the recent statement of the OSCE co-chair countries.

Arthur Ghazaryan, a senior representative of the ARF -Dashnaktsutyun, says the Presidents of the OSCE Minsk Group Co-Chair countries, France, the Russian Federation, and the United States, were inadequate in their assessments.

“In our letter we note that Azerbaijan has regularly violated the truce since the ceasefire agreement of 1994 and has always dodged responsibility,” Ghazaryan said blaming all countries that turn a blind eye to Azerbaijan’s diversion.

Dashnaks Again Threaten ‘Regime Change’

January 13, 2010 Armenia No Comments

The Armenian Revolutionary Federation (Dashnaktsutyun) will strive to depose President Serzh Sarkisian if his fence-mending agreements with Turkey are unconditionally ratified by Armenia’s parliament, a leader of the nationalist opposition party said on Wednesday.

The warning came the day after the Constitutional Court upheld the legality of the two protocols on the normalization of Turkish-Armenian relations that have been strongly condemned by Dashnaktsutyun.

In a statement circulated on Wednesday, the party, which was for years represented in Armenia’s governments, criticized the ruling, while stressing the importance of some of its passages interpreting the protocols’ implications.

John Balian’s “Novel Approach” Brings the Armenian Saga to the Masses – An interview with John Balian by Lucine Kasbarian

Gray Wolves and White Doves cover art

Armenians often wish for a tale about the Armenian Genocide and its aftermath that would make a blockbuster film and draw attention to their cause. John Balian’s new book, Gray Wolves and White Doves (CreateSpace/Amazon.com), may be that tale.

Largely autobiographical, this atmospheric novel is presented through the eyes of an innocent young boy trying to make sense of the world as he grows up amid repressive conditions in Western Armenia/Eastern Turkey during the 1960s and 70s.

This fast-paced, multi-layered narrative takes readers from Hanna Ibelin’s (a.k.a. Jonah Ibelinian’s) close-knit family life in the perilous Asia Minor region of Palu to terror and tragedy while en route to Syria’s Kamishli, to a bleak existence on the mean streets of Istanbul.

New Children’s Picture Book From Armenian Folklore

Teaneck, N.J. and Belmont, Mass. –  An Armenian folktale retold by Armenian-American writer Lucine Kasbarian and illustrated by Moscow-based artist Maria Zaikina debuts with Marshall Cavendish Children’s Publishers in April 2011.

The Greedy Sparrow: An Armenian Tale is from the ancient Armenian oral tradition and culture, which was nearly obliterated during the Turkish genocide of the Armenians, Assyrians and Greeks in 1915. The author learned the tale from her father, editor and columnist C.K. Garabed, who would recite it to her at bedtime. He had learned it from his own grandmother, a celebrated storyteller from the Old Country.  The tale was first put to paper by Armenian poet Hovhannes Toumanian at the turn of the 20th century.

“We Need To Lift The Armenian Taboo”

Turkish writer and publicist Ahmet Insel labels the initiative of the Turkish Nationalist Movement Party to pray namaz on the ruins of Ani as provocation.

In an interview with “A1+,” the publicist said the initiative was supported only by a small percentage of Turks.

“They offered namaz in Ani in protest against Christian rites carried out in Trabzon and Akhtamar. The leader of the Nationalist Movement Party, Devlet Bahceli said if Christians are allowed to pray inside museums, similarly he can pray namaz in Armenian churches,” said Ahmet Insel.

The Turkish writer arrived in Armenia to participate in a book festival. Presentation of Armenian version of Dialogue sur le tabou arménien (Dialogue about the Armenian Tabou) co-authored by Ahmet Insel and Michel Marian was held during the festival.

US Media Discusses The Armenian Genocide

BURBANK, CALIFORNIA –  KFI 640, a popular news/talk radio station hosted by Bill Handel on September 23 aired a live interview with Michael Bobelian, the writer of a new book titled  Children of Armenia: A Forgotten Genocide and the Century-long Struggle for Justice

The book chronicles the aftermath of the Armenian Genocide of 1915, and recounts a people’s struggle for justice in the face of a century of silence and denial.

During the interview, which was aired during the prime morning time slot, Bill Handel addressed both the efforts within the United States to ensure that the US government appropriately acknowledges the Armenian Genocide and Turkey’s ongoing denial.

Beijing sets two flies standards for public toilets

Image 3.jpg

Authorities in the Chinese capital have set new standards for public toilets, including a stipulation that they should contain no more than two flies, BBC News reported. The new rules, published by the commission of city administration, also set standards on odour and cleaning litter bins.Toilets in places such as tourist spots must comply with the new standards. But it is not clear whether failing washrooms will be punished and if so, how.The new rules also cover cleaning, the use of equipment and training for attendants. There is an ordinance covering what is referred to as “discarded items” – there should be no more than two in any public convenience. The new standards also require signs in both Chinese and English to be installed in the toilets. They regulate advertisements displayed in toilets, saying they must not obstruct functionality and had to be legal, reports the Beijing Times.Beijing’s Municipal Commission of City Administration and Environment said in a statement that the regulations aimed to standardise toilet management at places such as parks, railway stations, hospitals and shopping malls. An unnamed official from the commission told local media that the guidelines on flies were meant for easy monitoring. However media reports cast doubt over whether the guidelines could be enforced.A commentary published in the Beijing News said one central Beijing district implemented a similar rule in 2008 when the city hosted the Olympic Games, but sanitation and hygiene still varied from toilet to toilet.Effort should be invested on educating the public to use public toilets in a better manner, said the commentary.

Pres Aliyev was celebrating last week his country’s historic victory at the United Nations. With an overwhelming number of votes, Azerbaijan was elected for the first time to the prestigious UN Security Council for a two-year term.

This column shall address three questions: 1) how did Azerbaijan manage to get elected to such an elite body? 2) what will Azerbaijan accomplish with its newly-acquired seat? 3) what actions did Armenians take to counter Azerbaijan’s candidacy?

A new Armenian website for culture — arteria.am — was launched at the Khnko Apor Children’s Library in Yerevan today. Armenian Book Center NGO is the organization responsible for the site, which was developed with the assistance of the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA) and the Eurasia Partnership Foundation.

The website is the response to “the published book and organized exhibit, the cinema poster and the music that pours from the stage or the signs in procession down the street, the writing on the walls of establishments, the conversations given wings in city transport, which wants take form and resound as commentary or criticism,” reads the section on concept on the site, which is currently only available in Armenian.

Pres Sarkozy Says ‘Tseghasbanoutyoun’, a word Obama has yet to utter

Flying to Armenia, French President Nicolas Sarkozy confided to his top aides last week: “I am going to toss a live grenade!” He was revealing his readiness to act firmly if Turkey continued to deny the Armenian Genocide.

Shortly after arriving in Yerevan, Pres Sarkozy courageously declared before journalists assembled at the Armenian Genocide Monument: “The Armenian Genocide is a historic reality that was recognized by France. Collective denial is even worse than individual denial.” When asked if France would adopt a law to prosecute those who deny the Genocide, the French President stated: “If Turkey revisited its history, faced its bright and dark sides, this recognition of the Genocide would be sufficient. But if Turkey will not do that, then without a doubt it would be necessary to go further.”

Scottish researcher Steven Sim reported about his troubling experiences in Nakhichevan, a historic Armenian territory now occupied by Azerbaijan. Since Sim’s 2006 revealing report has not been adequately publicized in the international media, I would like to present here some of its highlights.

Sim stated that he entered Nakhichevan by land from Turkey and traveled to the village of Abrakunis at Yernjak valley. When he asked a 12-year-old about an ancient church there, the boy pointed to an empty piece of land.
