Armenian Revolutionary Federation Activists Hand Letter To OSCE Yerevan Office (Video)

Nikol Aghbalyan Student Union of the ARF -Dashnaktsutyun today held a protest march to the OSCE Office in Yerevan against the statement of the President of the OSCE Minsk Group’s Co-Chair countries and provocative actions of Azerbaijan..

The marchers handed a letter to the Head of the Military-Political Department, Gregor Mikhailski, expressing their indignation over the recent statement of the OSCE co-chair countries.

Arthur Ghazaryan, a senior representative of the ARF -Dashnaktsutyun, says the Presidents of the OSCE Minsk Group Co-Chair countries, France, the Russian Federation, and the United States, were inadequate in their assessments.

“In our letter we note that Azerbaijan has regularly violated the truce since the ceasefire agreement of 1994 and has always dodged responsibility,” Ghazaryan said blaming all countries that turn a blind eye to Azerbaijan’s diversion.

Dashnaks Again Threaten ‘Regime Change’

The Armenian Revolutionary Federation (Dashnaktsutyun) will strive to depose President Serzh Sarkisian if his fence-mending agreements with Turkey are unconditionally ratified by Armenia’s parliament, a leader of the nationalist opposition party said on Wednesday.

The warning came the day after the Constitutional Court upheld the legality of the two protocols on the normalization of Turkish-Armenian relations that have been strongly condemned by Dashnaktsutyun.

In a statement circulated on Wednesday, the party, which was for years represented in Armenia’s governments, criticized the ruling, while stressing the importance of some of its passages interpreting the protocols’ implications.

“Serzh Sargsyan Is Responsible”

ARF representatives are silently awaiting the decision of the Constitutional Court with signs reading “No concessions to Turkey”, “CC, refute the anti-constitutional Protocols” without any screams and are more active when it comes to the issue of the Turkey-Armenia Protocols.

“Why should I believe in the CC when it hasn’t met anybody’s expectations to date? I think that we must demand Serzh Sargsyan’s resignation. He is the one responsible for all this and any reasonable person knows that. The rest are doing what he says and that is my personal opinion. I don’t understand Serzh Sargsyan’s policies. If he is not thinking about the fate of the nation, he doesn’t deserve to be the leader of this nation,” ARF representative Susanna Poghosyan told “A1+” today.

Armenian Revolutionary Federation Withdraws from Ruling Coalition, Joins Opposition: Hovhannisyan

The most important event for Armenia last year was the way the Armenia-Turkey rapprochment was not thought through, said Armenian Revolutionary Federation parliamentary faction leader Vahan Hovhannisyan, summing up 2009.

“Perhaps it was on the evening of April 23 when our foreign minister announced, along with Switzerland’s and Turkey’s foreign ministers, where he pointed out that he was prepared for the ‘route map’ and everything was already decided beforehand,” emphasized Hovhannisyan.

According to the MP, no document has been established related to the structure and details of the signing of the Protocols, and one cannot consider the preparatory stage to have concluded.

More Serious Response From Kocharyan

According to ARF Bureau member Vahan Hovhannisyan, Levon Ter-Petrosyan’s statements were more of a “commercial character and were offering services to the authorities in exchange of payment.”

According to Hovhannisyan, Armenia will pay a high price if that payment is from the budget. If not, the payment may be of a political nature, that is, to ensure a certain percentage in the 2012 parliamentary elections. Vahan Hovhannisyan doesn’t consider the decision of the authorities to grant Nikol Pashinyan the necessary notice for registering as a candidate by chance. Vahan Hovhannisyan knows the authorities very well and knows that “they don’t tend to make compromises for even the smallest issues.”

More People Would Support Armenian National Congress than Dashnaktsutyun: Opinion

“It seems to me, it can be argued, that ANC [Armenian National Congress] is the opposition, while Dashnaktsutyun [Armenian Revolutionary Federation] is not. Dashnaktsutyun attempted to become the opposition, it attempted, it made the right move, someone had to come out on the streets and incite the people, but since Dashnaktsutyun didn’t have that opposition status which Congress had, the people didn’t listen to that call and didn’t follow them. But if Congress had come out, more people would come out after them and there would’ve been results in that case,” said Social Democrat Hunchakian Party (SDHP) member Vahan Shirkhanyan at a press conference today.

Asked if SDHP is against steps taken by the Armenian National Congress, is it possible that it will withdraw from being part of the ANC, Shirkhanyan stated:

Dashnaks Press Karabakh To Ban Concession Talk

The Armenian Revolutionary Federation (Dashnaktsutyun) has thrown its weight behind calls for authorities in Nagorno-Karabakh to prosecute anyone who publicly advocates the return of any of the Azerbaijani territories controlled by the Karabakh Armenians.

Armen Sargsian, the sole member of the Karabakh parliament affiliated with Dashnaktsutyun, made a corresponding appeal to the unrecognized republic’s law-enforcement bodies last week.

“All those citizens who call into question our territorial integrity under the guise of mutual concessions or other variants [of settlement with Azerbaijan] must be subjected to criminal liability because that is not a manifestation of democracy or pluralism but an unconstitutional step,” he said during a parliament session in Stepanakert. “And any unconstitutional step must be punishable by criminal law.”

ARF Dashnaktsutyun: Turkey Goes ByPeconditions

Turkish officials’ activities are aimed at not only internal, domestic audiences, told journalists member of ARF Dashnaktsutyun, Hrayr Karapetyan. He described Armenian foreign policy as “passive and unclear”. When asked about Edward Nalbandyan’s statement that Armenia is not under anyone’s pressure, Hrayr Karapetyan said: “Foreign Minister’s statements are sent to opposition, in particular, to ARFD, instead of being designed to neutralize the statements made by Turkish officials. Our Foreign Ministry’s actions are not in tune with the situation.”

Hrayr Karapetyan expressed regret that Turkish declarations come gradually true. He pointed that Turkey openly seeks to chair OSCE Minsk Group to participate in settlement of Karabakh.

Does ARF-Dashnaktsutiun Suffer From Masochism?

During the signing ceremony of the Armenian-Turkish Protocols Armenian Foreign Minister Edward Nalbandian didn’t feel belittled or insulted.

“I do not know who is supposed to feel embarrassed. People circulating such information probably suffer from masochism,” Edward Nalbandian said during a joint news conference with his Belarusian counterpart on October 30.

The Armenian FM refuted ARF-Dashnaktsutiun’s allegation that the countries forcing the foreign ministers to sign the documents stood behind the FMs during the signing.

“I must say that the countries you have mentioned did their best to bring the sides closer. They didn’t pressurize us. The opinion that Armenia-Turkey protocols were signed under the pressure of superpowers is erroneous. All countries of the globe mediate the process with the exception of two or three states,” said Edward Nalbandian.

Is ‘Reconciliation’ Compatible with Justice?

By Lucine Kasbarian

On Wednesday May 12, at the Armenian Library and Museum of America (ALMA) in Watertown, Massachusetts, editors Emil Sanamyan of the Armenian Reporter and Khatchig Mouradian of theArmenian Weekly spoke about their recent trip to Turkey sponsored by TEPAV – a Turkish think tank that has recently been promoting Turkish-Armenian relations. TEPAV is funded by TOBB, the Union of Chambers and Commodity Exchanges of Turkey.

ALMA Executive Director Mariam Stepanyan welcomed the audience after which moderator Marc Mamigonian, Academic Affairs Director of the National Association for Armenian Studies and Research (NAASR), opened by noting that there was no formal title for the evening’s program because the trip was not necessarily part of what would be termed “Turkish-Armenian reconciliation or relations.”

Davit of Sassoon is Undefeated or Once More on Foreign Language-Medium Schools in Armenia

By Ara Papian – Head, “Modus Vivendi” Center

The changes proposed by the Government to the law on language has recently become subject to heated public debate. It is natural and good that society express many opinions. This implies that we are gradually surmounting the legacy of the not-too-distant past. It is unfortunate, however, that those in favour of the changes to the law are not putting forth reasonable counter-arguments to the political, legal, economic, psychological and cultural facts presented by their opponents, but are instead simply warping the essence of the issue in attempting to present the case as a manifestation of xenophobia and advocacy for self-imposed isolationism.

An Investigative Report:The Woodrow Wilson Center Desecrates its Namesake’s Legacy and Violates its Congressional Mandate

By: David Boyajian

Is the Woodrow Wilson Center seeking to discredit the Treaty of Sèvres on its 90th anniversary by honoring Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu?

Woodrow Wilson, the 28th American president, is looking down in horror at what the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars (WWC; WilsonCenter.org) is doing in his name.

Most Americans are not aware of the DC-based organization, or that their taxes comprise one-third of its multi-million dollar annual budget.

The WWC was created by Congress in 1968 through the Woodrow Wilson Memorial Act to commemorate the late president’s “ideals and concerns” and memorialize “his accomplishments.”

The WWC has in several ways, however, violated its Congressional mandate.

Armenian Bread Price Set For Further Rise

August 6, 2010

The price of bread in Armenia looked set on Friday to soar further following the Russian government’s decision to ban all grain exports because of a severe drought that has devastated crops across Russia.

The move, announced by Prime Minister Vladimir Putin on Thursday, pushed international prices of wheat to the highest level since the 2007-08 global food crisis. They jumped by more than 12 percent in European commodity markets.

The wholesale and retail prices rose just as drastically in Armenia where one 50-kilogram sack of flour cost between 9,500 and 10,000 ($27.4) on Friday. The rise did not immediately push up bread prices. They are nonetheless expected to be adjusted accordingly in the coming days.

Armenian National Committtee of America (ANCA) Disbelieves Matthew Bryza Will Stand in The Way of Aliyev’s March To War

August 6, 2010

ANCA Executive Director Aram Hamparian commented on recent statement by political observer David Petrosian, who was cited as saying, “soonest appointment of a new U.S. ambassador to Armenia, – be it Matthew Bryza or someone else, is important in restraining Azerbaijan’s ambitions.”

Aram Hamparian responded as follows, “Just to be clear, this is the same Mr. Bryza who was the primary U.S. adviser to the Georgian government of Mikheil Saakashvili as he stumbled into war with Russia; the same diplomat with controversial ties to top Azerbaijani leaders (Foreign Minister Elmar Mammedyarov served as a groomsman in his Istanbul wedding to Caspian energy expert/advocate Zeyno Baran), the same nominee backed by senior Azerbaijanis close to the Aliyev regime and by leaders of the Azerbaijani American community, and; the same U.S. official who has, for more than a decade, turned a blind eye to Azerbaijani threats, military aggression, and acts of cultural desecration.

I Believe You Will: Mammadyarov and Davutoglu Discussed Karabakh Conflict

August 6, 2010

Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov hopes that his Turkish counterpart Ahmet Davutoglu will take very useful initiatives in the settlement of the Nagorno Karabakh conflict, reports Azerbaijani news agency Trend.

“Turkey is highly respected in the international arena, and therefore I believe that Ahmet Davutoglu will take very useful initiatives in the Karabakh settlement”, Mammadyarov said at a joint press conference following a summit of Turkic-speaking countries.

The summit was held in Bodrum town in western Turkish province of Mugla on Thursday bringing together foreign ministers of Turkey, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan.

US Secretary of State Extends Her Gratitude To The Cafesjian Center For The Arts in Armenia

August 6, 2010

The US Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton in a letter to the Director of Administration and the Acting Executive Director of the Cafesjian Center for the Arts Vahagn Marabyan thanked the Center for hosting her meeting with Armenian civil society leaders.

“The center is a magnificent landmark and a wonderful symbol of Armenian- American cooperation. Our tour of the Cafesjian sculpture garden and the Chihuly gallery was one of the highlights of my visit to Yerevan”, the letter of Secretary Clinton said.

US Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton visited the Cafesjian Center for the Arts on July 5th, 2010. In her honor, a glass sculpture by Sidney Hutter was placed on exhibit – similar to the one by the same artist, added to the White House Craft Collection in 1993. The sculpture, known as the “White House Vase”, is now in the William J. Clinton Presidential Library.
