Republican Party of Armenia (HHK) No Longer Understands Vartan Oskanian

Deputy Chairman of the Republican Party of Armenia (HHK) Razmik Zohrabyan does not share ex Foreign Minister vartan Oskanian’s opinion that we witness the repetition of 1998 in the talks over Karabakh and the situation can be recovered only through a power change.

“Mr. Oskanian has always surprised me. If he is not a foreign minister today, it does not mean he can criticize the present authorities. He was in our camp for ten years. Robert Kocharian, Vartan Oskanian and many others were in our ranks. Today we follow their policy though they criticize us as they are no longer in power. Why should we resign today?” wondered Mr. Zohrabyan.
The HHK deputy chairman is surprised that Vartan Oskanian speaks of power change more impertinently than the opposition. “I cannot understand what Mr. Oskanian is displeased with. Why should our teammate raise the issue of power change?”

Gasparyan mentioned that he had received the invitation from Valeri Saharyan, the singer’s producer and head of the “Armenia Production” producing centre.

Referring to Eurovision 2010, Gasparyan said it is not a serious contest as it is SMS voting and not professionals that decide who the winners are.

Vahan Hovannisian Urges Armenians To Leave Turkey

A leader of the Armenian Revolutionary Federation (Dashnaktsutyun) on Friday urged Armenian citizens living in Turkey to promptly return home, claiming that Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s latest controversial statement has put their security at risk.

Vahan Hovannisian, who leads the nationalist opposition party’s faction in Armenia’s parliament, joined official Yerevan in condemning Erdogan’s threats to deport them en masse in response to fresh foreign resolutions recognizing the 1915 Armenian massacres in Turkey as genocide. “Erdogan unmasked himself and the world saw what kind of a country it is dealing with,” he said.

“As regards our fellow Armenians who have found themselves in Turkey for one or another economic reason, I am advising them to immediately leave that country because it’s obvious with whom we are dealing,” he told a news conference. “A threat voiced from such a high level can be deemed by some elements a signal for anti-Armenian actions.”

US State Department Responds to Erdogan’s Statement on Deporting Armenians

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s statement on deporting Armenians living illegally in Turkey is not a threat, said US Assistant Secretary of State Philip Gordon.

“In my opinion, Prime Minister Erdogan only wanted to highlight that there are 100,000 Armenians living in Turkey illegally. I don’t believe he threatened to deport them from the country. Those are separate issues. Every country has an issue with illegal immigrants and approaches it according to its laws. That has no relation whatsover with any vote in the United States or the House or Representatives. Let’s not search for a connection between the Congress’ activities and that issue,” said Gordon, adding that the US administration would very much like that Turkey’s PM not turn down its invitation to attend the nuclear security summit in Washington in April.

London Editorial: Turkey in “dark ages”

March 19, 2010

(The following editorial is from the London Daily News online journal.)

Turkey once again is retreating into “dark ages mode” with threats by Prime Erdogan following comments during a recent visit to London to expel 100,000 Armenians in Turkey “if necessary I will tell the 100,000: OK, time to go back to your country”.

The issue of the Armenian genocide and the failure by Turkey to recognize this ever happened, not only discredits any aspirations that Turkey has of joining the European Union, but also its supporters which include the current Conservative and Labour party’s in the UK.

British Justice Minister Tells Erdogan the Armenian Genocide Bill Will Not Pass

March 17, 2010

British Justice Minister Jack Straw on Tuesday assured Turkey’s Prime Minister that Parliament would not pass a resolution recognizing the Ottoman-era killings of Armenians as genocide, CNNTürk reported.

“The chance of this becoming law is zero. I can assure everyone on this issue, Straw said.

After the Swedish parliament adopted an Armenian genocide resolution last week, many have turned their attention to the British Parliament, where a draft will be submitted to a House of Commons committee after a second reading on April 30.

If it is approved, an Armenian Genocide Remembrance Day will be established in the country.

“The English government and the opposition do not support this draft,” Straw said.

Davutoglu Speaks Out Against Deporting Armenians Living in Turkey Without Status

March 16, 2010

To deport citizens of Armenia living illegally in Turkey means to give a “winning card” to those countries who come out against Turkey, said Turkish Minister of Foreign Affairs Ahmet Davutoglu during a closed-door meeting of the foreign affairs committee of Turkey’s Grand National Assembly, responding to opposition People’s Republican Party MP Canan Arıtman’s earlier statements which suggested deporting all Armenian citizens.

“Such a step would become a winning card in the hands of those countries who are against us. In addition, all of the world’s countries’ papers will publish articles about deported Armenians. A nationalist image would form, [and] Turkey will be in a more difficult situation,” said Davutoglu.
