Image g_image.php

In the course of his pontifical visit to Georgia, Catholicos of All Armenians Garegin II consecrated an Armenian Church in Tbilisi. Arriving in the Georgian capital with a team of priests, the Catholicos was greeted by the clergy of the Armenian Diocesse and thousands of Armenian parishioners.

The consecration ceremony was preceded by the grand opening of the Armenian center Hayartun. Founded in1921 by great Armenian poet Hovhannes Tumanyan, the institution was closed down in the 1940s. But the Georgian-Armenian diocese founded a namesake center in 2011 due to the donations of Russian-based benefactor Boris Sahakov and Georgian-Armenian businessmen.

Environmentalists are warning that in Armenia illegal logging continues unabated and offer pilot programs to deal with the situation by influencing the demand in firewood through ensuring alternative access to fuel.

Within the framework of the research conducted by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and the International Center for Agribusiness Research and Education (ICARE) a survey has been conducted among 819 households in Armenia’s eight provinces located near forests and among 20 sawmills situated in three provinces that are rich in forests. The survey reveals that the minimum annual amount of illegal logging of forests makes 240,000 cubic meters, which approximately 80 times exceeds the official figures.

Armenian MP Arzakantsyan Undergoes "Unique" Medical Treatment in Paris

When asked by reporters why he doesn’t attend parliamentary sessions in Armenia, MP Tigran Arzakantsyan (on the right) answered that he’s ill and undergoing treatment in a number of European countries. He was even kind enough to mention their names.

Let’s now delve deeper into the life and activities of MP Arzakantsyan, who seems to prefer Paris over Yerevan. We’ll also note some financial details that the MP has failed to note in his disclosure statements over the years.

Marnes-la-Coquette is a small community outside Paris with the highest household income in France, according to the French National Institute for Statistics and Economic Studies (INSEE), where Arzakantsyan owns a villa.

Appeals Court Sustains Lower Court Ruling in Libel Suit Against Local Armenian Paper

The Court of Appeals today denied an appeal by Dareskizb LLC, publisher of local daily Haykakan Jamanak (“Armenian Times”), thereby sustaining a lower court ruling mandating the paper to pay compensation for damages caused through libel and insult to three MPs.

Recall, in February of this year, the Court of General Jurisdiction of Kentron (Center) and Nork Marash Districts of Yerevan charged Haykakan Jamanak to pay 2 million 44 thousand AMD (about $5,600 USD) each to three members of parliament (who are also major businessmen): Ruben Hayrapetyan, Samvel Aleksanyan and Levon Sargsyan.

The three MPs were demanding that the paper not only publish a retraction to a story published on Oct. 14, 2010, titled “Seven of the Eight are on the List”, but also pay compensation to the tune of 2.5 million AMD each — for moral losses and court expenses incurred.

Armenian anti-trust body closes in on fuel seller

A state regulator overseeing fair play rules on the part of businesses has spoken of some breaches it claims to have revealed in the operations of a petrol importing company that holds a dominant position on Armenia’s gasoline and diesel fuel market.

At its meeting on Wednesday, the State Commission for the Protection of Economic Competition (www.competition.am) decided to launch administrative proceedings against City Petrol Group over suspected violations.

The company is believed to hold a dominant position in the gasoline and diesel fuel market, with its total share exceeding 40 percent.

Petrol and diesel prices have been on the rise in Armenia during the past several months, putting an additional strain on the budgets of motorists who have not switched to liquefied gas as their prime fuel.

Another Armenian Daily Newspaper Fined For Libel

Thumbnail

A court in Yerevan on Wednesday partly accepted libel claims made against the “Yerkir” daily by a wealthy businessman and parliament deputy close to the government.

The court ordered the newspaper to pay the businessman, Tigran Arzakantsian, 288,000 drams ($765) for a disparaging article about him published in January. The sum fell well short of 3.5 million drams in damages demanded by him.

The article in question accused Arzakantsian, who owns a brandy company and has other business interests, of leading a playboy lifestyle, frequently visiting casinos in Russia and making “a habit of being beaten up.” The article also pointed to his rare appearances in the Armenian parliament.

Reporter’s Notebook: Covering the Antics Inside the Armenian National Assembly

MP’s at the RA National Assembly will be off for vacation during the next three months and will not have to show up at legislative sessions once every two weeks.

Some MP’s, it seems, are on constant vacation. Those with outside business interests hardly show up for work at the parliament and couldn’t care less about the “measly” 315,000 AMD monthly salary. They have more profitable business deals to hammer out.

No wonder that the more “entrepreneurial” MP’s try all the tricks to avoid showing up at the parliament.

Would you be surprised to learn that some even go so far as to get a “doctor’s note” excusing them from their legislative duties?

Yerevan Daily Fined For ‘Slandering’ Kocharian Family

Thumbnail

A court in Yerevan on Monday ordered a pro-opposition newspaper to pay the family of former President Robert Kocharian 3 million drams ($8,000) in damages for what it called slanderous reports that attributed extensive business interests to his relatives.

In a ruling reflecting an upsurge in libel suits against Armenian media, the court at the same time refused to force the “Zhamanak” daily to pay another 3,000 million drams for legal expenses which the plaintiff claims to have incurred.

The case stems from a series of articles that were published by “Zhamanak” last fall. The paper linked Kocharian’s wife Bella with trade in medicines and claimed that his older son Sedrak owns diamond mines in India. It also accused Sedrak Kocharian of defrauding an Armenian businessman.

Andranik’s Ghost Continues to Haunt the Turks

Thumbnail

What transpired on the night of May 28 in the Volkonka village on the outskirts of Sochi can only described as barbarity.

Under the cover of darkness, a statue dedicated to General Andranik, erected at the site just days before, was scandalously dismantled. This ignoble act of dishonour took place on the eve of the 93rd anniversary of the foundation of the First Armenian Republic.

The bust of the famed Armenian military leader had been erected with the overwhelming approval and resources of the local community.

Surprisingly, the statue was dismantled by Hrach Makeyan, the Sochi chapter head of the Union of Armenians of Russia (UAR).

John Balian’s “Novel Approach” Brings the Armenian Saga to the Masses – An interview with John Balian by Lucine Kasbarian

Gray Wolves and White Doves cover art

Armenians often wish for a tale about the Armenian Genocide and its aftermath that would make a blockbuster film and draw attention to their cause. John Balian’s new book, Gray Wolves and White Doves (CreateSpace/Amazon.com), may be that tale.

Largely autobiographical, this atmospheric novel is presented through the eyes of an innocent young boy trying to make sense of the world as he grows up amid repressive conditions in Western Armenia/Eastern Turkey during the 1960s and 70s.

This fast-paced, multi-layered narrative takes readers from Hanna Ibelin’s (a.k.a. Jonah Ibelinian’s) close-knit family life in the perilous Asia Minor region of Palu to terror and tragedy while en route to Syria’s Kamishli, to a bleak existence on the mean streets of Istanbul.

New Children’s Picture Book From Armenian Folklore

Teaneck, N.J. and Belmont, Mass. –  An Armenian folktale retold by Armenian-American writer Lucine Kasbarian and illustrated by Moscow-based artist Maria Zaikina debuts with Marshall Cavendish Children’s Publishers in April 2011.

The Greedy Sparrow: An Armenian Tale is from the ancient Armenian oral tradition and culture, which was nearly obliterated during the Turkish genocide of the Armenians, Assyrians and Greeks in 1915. The author learned the tale from her father, editor and columnist C.K. Garabed, who would recite it to her at bedtime. He had learned it from his own grandmother, a celebrated storyteller from the Old Country.  The tale was first put to paper by Armenian poet Hovhannes Toumanian at the turn of the 20th century.

“We Need To Lift The Armenian Taboo”

Turkish writer and publicist Ahmet Insel labels the initiative of the Turkish Nationalist Movement Party to pray namaz on the ruins of Ani as provocation.

In an interview with “A1+,” the publicist said the initiative was supported only by a small percentage of Turks.

“They offered namaz in Ani in protest against Christian rites carried out in Trabzon and Akhtamar. The leader of the Nationalist Movement Party, Devlet Bahceli said if Christians are allowed to pray inside museums, similarly he can pray namaz in Armenian churches,” said Ahmet Insel.

The Turkish writer arrived in Armenia to participate in a book festival. Presentation of Armenian version of Dialogue sur le tabou arménien (Dialogue about the Armenian Tabou) co-authored by Ahmet Insel and Michel Marian was held during the festival.

US Media Discusses The Armenian Genocide

The book chronicles the aftermath of the Armenian Genocide of 1915, and recounts a people’s struggle for justice in the face of a century of silence and denial.

During the interview, which was aired during the prime morning time slot, Bill Handel addressed both the efforts within the United States to ensure that the US government appropriately acknowledges the Armenian Genocide and Turkey’s ongoing denial.

Pres Aliyev was celebrating last week his country’s historic victory at the United Nations. With an overwhelming number of votes, Azerbaijan was elected for the first time to the prestigious UN Security Council for a two-year term.

This column shall address three questions: 1) how did Azerbaijan manage to get elected to such an elite body? 2) what will Azerbaijan accomplish with its newly-acquired seat? 3) what actions did Armenians take to counter Azerbaijan’s candidacy?

New Online Cultural Platform Launched in Armenia

Thumbnail

A new Armenian website for culture — arteria.am — was launched at the Khnko Apor Children’s Library in Yerevan today. Armenian Book Center NGO is the organization responsible for the site, which was developed with the assistance of the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA) and the Eurasia Partnership Foundation.

The website is the response to “the published book and organized exhibit, the cinema poster and the music that pours from the stage or the signs in procession down the street, the writing on the walls of establishments, the conversations given wings in city transport, which wants take form and resound as commentary or criticism,” reads the section on concept on the site, which is currently only available in Armenian.

Pres Sarkozy Says ‘Tseghasbanoutyoun’, a word Obama has yet to utter

Flying to Armenia, French President Nicolas Sarkozy confided to his top aides last week: “I am going to toss a live grenade!” He was revealing his readiness to act firmly if Turkey continued to deny the Armenian Genocide.

Shortly after arriving in Yerevan, Pres Sarkozy courageously declared before journalists assembled at the Armenian Genocide Monument: “The Armenian Genocide is a historic reality that was recognized by France. Collective denial is even worse than individual denial.” When asked if France would adopt a law to prosecute those who deny the Genocide, the French President stated: “If Turkey revisited its history, faced its bright and dark sides, this recognition of the Genocide would be sufficient. But if Turkey will not do that, then without a doubt it would be necessary to go further.”

Scottish researcher Steven Sim reported about his troubling experiences in Nakhichevan, a historic Armenian territory now occupied by Azerbaijan. Since Sim’s 2006 revealing report has not been adequately publicized in the international media, I would like to present here some of its highlights.

Sim stated that he entered Nakhichevan by land from Turkey and traveled to the village of Abrakunis at Yernjak valley. When he asked a 12-year-old about an ancient church there, the boy pointed to an empty piece of land.

Kocharian Criticized Sargsyan’s Handling of Armenia-Turkey Protocols, But Said He Won’t Interfere

Thumbnail

In a Sept. 25, 2009 meeting with former President of Armenia Robert Kocharian initiated by then US Ambassador to Armenia Marie L. Yovanovitch, Armenia’s second president criticized current President Serzh Sargsyan for his handling of the rapprochement with neighboring Turkey.

According to a diplomatic cable sent by then US Deputy Chief of Mission Joseph Pennington to the US State Department soon after the meeting and recently published by WikiLeaks, Kocharian asked, “why should Turkey’s parliament have to ratify” a set of protocols when “the Turks did no such thing in closing the border” in 1993? In the ex-president’s view, the Turks were exploiting the protocols and Sargsyan “in an effort to embark upon a negotiating process that they had every intention of dragging out, to the detriment of Armenia’s interests… He said he would have imposed a deadline on the Turks to do both things, and criticized Sargsyan for not doing so. ‘Now Turkey is dictating the process, and we have no room for maneuver’.”
