Prosperous Armenia v Republicans: “Sport conflict” and Beyond
Besides the Armenian-Turkish protocols and Armenian-Azerbaijani negotiations, public attention in recent days has also focused on simmering tensions between two heavyweight political parties of the governing coalition – Prosperous Armenia and the Republican Party of Armenia (RPA).
Difficult relations between the two parties were aggravated after, at a press conference last week, senior RPA member, wealthy businessman and President of the Football Federation of Armenia Ruben Hayrapetyan made acrimonious comments regarding the statement of Prosperous Armenia leader, wealthy businessman and President of the National Olympic Committee of Armenia Gagik Tsarukyan. Tsarukyan had said that he did not go to the Turkish city of Bursa to watch the Turkey-Armenia soccer match (on October 14) because he knew beforehand that the Armenian team would lose.
“I think this statement is amoral,” said Hayrapetyan, commenting on the statement by the former world arm-wrestling champion. “With his muscles, he should have gone to Bursa and supported our team.”
Prosperous Armenia’s press office immediately reacted to Hayrapetyan’s words with a statement in which it said that “one cannot speculate about morality judging from separate statements, but rather morality is formed over the years of a person’s work, in accordance with the trace that this person leaves.”
“In this sense our people see very well who and how manages the sphere he has been put in charge of and what successes he achieves. Such a sensitive sphere for Armenian sport fans as soccer has been in a sad state for years, and fans who dare demand the resignation of those in charge of this sphere are beaten by police right in the field upon Hayrapetyan’s personal instruction,” Prosperous Armenia said in its statement.
The recent bickering between the two leading members of the parties shows the general tension between the two coalition partners observed of late. Last week, in response to the Republican move to lower the quorum at meetings of the Yerevan city council from 34 to 17 attendees, representatives of Prosperous Armenia threatened to consider the resignation of their mandates. (Only these two parties are represented in the city’s elected body). In Prosperous Armenia’s opinion, a lower quorum narrows the scope for its activities and diminishes its political weight in the capital’s municipal assembly.
