Police Proved that Armenian Political Prisoner in Armenia in Last 5 Years, Says Pashinyan’s Attorney

Haykakan Zhamanak (“Armenian Times”) chief editor, political prisoner Nikol Pashinyan’s civil action against RA police was raised in Yerevan’s Administrative Court today. The police had earlier declined to issue a certificate to Pashinyan that stated that he had been residing in Armenia for the last 5 years, without which the Central Electoral Commission is not entitled to register his candidacy in an upcoming parliamentary by-election.

The defendants, in this case, were represented by police spokespersons under the RA government who were insisting that Pashinyan was not in Armenia from February 26, 2008, till July 7, 2009, and didn’t reside in his Ijevan home during that period.

Pashinyan, during his testimony, stated that during the period outlined by the police, he was indeed in Armenia and did not leave the Republic of Armenia, which is proved by his passport.

Defendant Gor Harutyunyan, during his turn, noted that Pashinyan, through the mass media, announced that he is not in Armenia, to which Pashinyan responded that during the time when he was wanted by the police, he wrote a novel where he referred to the main character in the first person (which it seems was why perhaps the defendant assumed he had said he was in Armenia). He noted that, also during that time, he always said that RA police and Special Investigation Service couldn’t uncover his whereabouts, since they do not have the necessary expert and intellectual capabilities. That, said Pashinyan, is proved by the fact that he surrendered to law enforcement bodies on July 1, 2009, while police found him just six days later.

Numerous questions posed by Pashinyan’s attorneys, which were directed to the defendants and were related to those sources which their action was based on, remained unanswered, since the defendants refrained from responding to those particular questions.

The prosecution was also unable to say where and when Pashinyan was during the time when he was allegedly not in Armenia. Afterwards, the plaintiff presented a photo of Pashinyan and his wife taken in April 2009, as well as presenting Pashinyan’s wife’s passport which also showed that she too had not left Armenia.

The judge, taking all the evidence into consideration, noted that a final decision will be announced on November 20 at 10 am.

While speaking to journalists briefly after the court proceedings, Pashinyan’s attorney Lusine Sahakyan said that “during this trial, the police were able to prove that Nikol Pashinyan was residing in Armenia in the last 5 years.”

London Editorial: Turkey in “dark ages”

March 19, 2010

(The following editorial is from the London Daily News online journal.)

Turkey once again is retreating into “dark ages mode” with threats by Prime Erdogan following comments during a recent visit to London to expel 100,000 Armenians in Turkey “if necessary I will tell the 100,000: OK, time to go back to your country”.

The issue of the Armenian genocide and the failure by Turkey to recognize this ever happened, not only discredits any aspirations that Turkey has of joining the European Union, but also its supporters which include the current Conservative and Labour party’s in the UK.

Los Angeles to host an event in commemoration of Shahan Natalie’s 125th anniversary

March 18, 2010

In commemoration of the 125th anniversary of Shahan Natalie’s birth, the Shahan Natalie Family Foundation invites the public to attend a tribute to the living memory of the internationally known intrepid Armenian thinker, writer, orator, and activist.

The event will take place on Saturday, April 10, 2010, in the Los Angeles Public Library’s Mark Taper Auditorium. Preceding the afternoon program, Sylva Natalie Manoogian will lead a Hye (Armenian) Treasures tour of the Central Library’s resources, Asbarez.com reported.

Born in the village of Husenik, province of Kharberd, Historic Armenia, Shahan Natalie (born Hagop Der Hagopian) was orphaned at the age of 11, during the 1895 Hamidian massacres of the Armenians. He was sent to Istanbul and was accepted by the famed Berberian Academy, where his literary career and community activism were launched.

British Justice Minister Tells Erdogan the Armenian Genocide Bill Will Not Pass

March 17, 2010

British Justice Minister Jack Straw on Tuesday assured Turkey’s Prime Minister that Parliament would not pass a resolution recognizing the Ottoman-era killings of Armenians as genocide, CNNTürk reported.

“The chance of this becoming law is zero. I can assure everyone on this issue, Straw said.

After the Swedish parliament adopted an Armenian genocide resolution last week, many have turned their attention to the British Parliament, where a draft will be submitted to a House of Commons committee after a second reading on April 30.

If it is approved, an Armenian Genocide Remembrance Day will be established in the country.

“The English government and the opposition do not support this draft,” Straw said.

Davutoglu Speaks Out Against Deporting Armenians Living in Turkey Without Status

March 16, 2010

To deport citizens of Armenia living illegally in Turkey means to give a “winning card” to those countries who come out against Turkey, said Turkish Minister of Foreign Affairs Ahmet Davutoglu during a closed-door meeting of the foreign affairs committee of Turkey’s Grand National Assembly, responding to opposition People’s Republican Party MP Canan Arıtman’s earlier statements which suggested deporting all Armenian citizens.

“Such a step would become a winning card in the hands of those countries who are against us. In addition, all of the world’s countries’ papers will publish articles about deported Armenians. A nationalist image would form, [and] Turkey will be in a more difficult situation,” said Davutoglu.
