Independent: Armenia Emerging From Troubled Times

Independent has published an article titled “Armenia’s latest struggle – the battle for tourists.”

“This country is emerging from troubled times. The ceasefire is holding with Azerbaijan and the border with Turkey is due to reopen. Now it’s welcoming new visitors,” Mark Leftly writes in his article, which goes on:

“Armenia and its easterly neighbor, Azerbaijan, are technically still at war over the Nagorno-Karabakh region. Most importantly, Armenia’s old enemy to the west, Turkey, supported Azerbaijan and closed its 330km (205 mile) long border with the land-locked country. Finally, in October, some real progress was made on economic and diplomatic co-operation between the countries, with the signing of protocols that will soon open up a common border.

A result of cultural and religious tension, the genocide is generally said to have started in 1915 in the wake of divided Armenian loyalties in the First World War. The museum’s fluent English-speaking guide shows me exhibits related to Armenians who had won Olympic medals for the Ottomans in 1912, and then a gruesome photograph of their countrymen being hanged by that empire in Aleppo four years later. There are proclamations condemning genocide from international leaders, including a recent letter from California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Turkey denies Armenia’s version of events, and it is this that divides Yerevan today. Unless Turkey acknowledges the genocide, many Armenians do not want to sign any agreement with their old enemy. Interestingly, the museum’s guide does not take this view. “It is natural for neighbors to have good relations in a global world,” it says.”

Los Angeles to host an event in commemoration of Shahan Natalie’s 125th anniversary

In commemoration of the 125th anniversary of Shahan Natalie’s birth, the Shahan Natalie Family Foundation invites the public to attend a tribute to the living memory of the internationally known intrepid Armenian thinker, writer, orator, and activist.

The event will take place on Saturday, April 10, 2010, in the Los Angeles Public Library’s Mark Taper Auditorium. Preceding the afternoon program, Sylva Natalie Manoogian will lead a Hye (Armenian) Treasures tour of the Central Library’s resources, Asbarez.com reported.

Born in the village of Husenik, province of Kharberd, Historic Armenia, Shahan Natalie (born Hagop Der Hagopian) was orphaned at the age of 11, during the 1895 Hamidian massacres of the Armenians. British Justice Minister Tells Erdogan the Armenian Genocide Bill Will Not Pass

British Justice Minister Jack Straw on Tuesday assured Turkey’s Prime Minister that Parliament would not pass a resolution recognizing the Ottoman-era killings of Armenians as genocide, CNNTürk reported.

“The chance of this becoming law is zero. I can assure everyone on this issue, Straw said.

After the Swedish parliament adopted an Armenian genocide resolution last week, many have turned their attention to the British Parliament, where a draft will be submitted to a House of Commons committee after a second reading on April 30.

If it is approved, an Armenian Genocide Remembrance Day will be established in the country.

Davutoglu Speaks Out Against Deporting Armenians Living in Turkey Without Status

To deport citizens of Armenia living illegally in Turkey means to give a “winning card” to those countries who come out against Turkey, said Turkish Minister of Foreign Affairs Ahmet Davutoglu during a closed-door meeting of the foreign affairs committee of Turkey’s Grand National Assembly, responding to opposition People’s Republican Party MP Canan Arıtman’s earlier statements which suggested deporting all Armenian citizens.

“Such a step would become a winning card in the hands of those countries who are against us. In addition, all of the world’s countries’ papers will publish articles about deported Armenians. A nationalist image would form, [and] Turkey will be in a more difficult situation,” said Davutoglu.  Read more... (217 words)

Turkey’s FM Davutoglu to raise Armenian Genocide Resolution in Turkish Parliament

Turkish FM Ahmet Davutoglu is due to deliver address on the developments that followed the endorsement of the Armenian Genocide Resolutions by the US House Foreign Affairs Committee and the Swedish Parliament at the Turkish Grand National Assembly today.

According to CnnTurk, the Foreign Affairs Committee of Turkey’s Parliament is due to convene a sitting March 15 to raise the Armenian Genocide Resolution passed by the US House Foreign Relations Committee and a number of foreign policy issues. Iran Frees Armenian Aid Worker Silva Harotonian

Aid worker Silva Harotonian, who has been in an Iranian prison for more than twenty months, has been released, reports The Armenian Reporter.

In a March 10 statement, her employer, the U.S.-funded International Research and Exchanges Board (IREX), thanked “the Government of Armenia for their engagement in securing Silva’s release.” Details of that engagement have not been made public.

Harotonian, an Iranian citizen, was arrested on June 26, 2008, while on a business trip to Tehran for IREX’s Maternal and Child Health Education and Exchange Program (MCHEEP). A Yerevan-based administrative officer for the program, launched in 2007, she was the only IREX staff member working in Iran at the time.  Read more... (255 words)
