Yerevan City Hall Prohibts Dashnaktsutyun Rally, But Organizers Say It Will Happen Regardless
During a press conference today, Armenian Revolutionary Federation Dashnaktsutyun (ARF-D) parliamentary faction leader Vahan Hovhannisyan had reason to brag about his opposition party encountering problems at city hall: Yerevan City Hall didn’t give the party permission to hold a rally at Charles Aznavour Square at 6 pm on Friday, justifying the decision by the fact that “a child-youth event will take place” at that time in that area.
“They say you can read about the event at our site. Our co-workers thoroughly searched the site and other relevant sites for several days, but they didn’t find anything like that,” said a convinced Hovhannisyan.
Furthermore, ARF-D stated that it wanted to change the location of the rally, but, in response, they were told: “We will organize an event there too.”
“We are not going to resign ourselves with such a decision; the rally will take place in any case,” Hovhannisyan said.
The ARF-D parliamentary faction leader, however, continues to insist that the former coalition faction will speak about change in the country’s leadership at the last moment and that it is a means for them to change the “unfavourable-for-Armenia” course of Armenian-Turkish relations.
“For example, for Levon-Ter Petrossian it [meaning, a change in the country’s leadership] is a goal. A change in leadership is the [Armenian National] Congress’ greatest aim. They are prepared to use any means to reach that goal. For example, the Armenian-Turkish relations, Nagorno-Karabakh issue, the people’s heavy socio-economic situation…”
Vahan Hovhannisyan, actually, is sure that these issues have nothing to do with the country’s leadership.
