Ter-Petrosian Bloc Toughens Stance On Turkey-Armenia Deal

In a clear toughening of its position, Armenia’s largest opposition alliance has officially condemned as “immoral and inadmissible” the signing of landmark agreements to normalize Turkish-Armenian agreements.

The Armenian National Congress (HAK) again accused President Serzh Sarkisian of willingly sacrificing greater international recognition of the Armenian genocide in return for what it called false Turkish promises to unconditionally reopen the border between the two countries.

“No Armenian leader has ever given such big gifts to the Turkish state and nation,” Levon Zurabian, the HAK’s central office coordinator, charged on Wednesday, presenting the bloc’s official reaction to the weekend signing ceremony in Zurich that made headlines in the international media.

“The signing of the Turkey-Armenia protocols is the latest unfortunate proof of the ruling regime’s political bankruptcy and diplomatic wretchedness,” read a separate statement issued by the HAK.

The alliance led by former President Levon Ter-Petrosian again based its criticism on a protocol clause that calls for a joint Turkish-Armenian study of the 1915 mass killings of Armenians in the Ottoman Empire. Like many in Armenia and its Diaspora, it believes that the Turks would exploit the study to prevent more countries from recognizing what many historians consider the first genocide of the 20th century.

“Even this immoral and inadmissible deal did not live up to Armenia’s expectations,” the HAK statement said, pointing to Turkish leaders’ continuing linkage between border opening and a resolution of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. It said Ankara will achieve its main objectives even if it fails to ensure the mandatory ratification of the protocols by the Turkish parliament.

The HAK similarly condemned the planned formation of a Turkish-Armenian historical “sub-commission” when it reacted to the August 31 publication of the two protocols in an early September statement. Still, it said at the time that the documents mark “considerable progress” towards the normalization of Turkish-Armenian relations, something which Ter-Petrosian himself had championed during his 1991-1998 presidency.

Ter-Petrosian stood by that statement when he addressed thousands of supporters rallying in Yerevan on September 18. He harshly criticized instead Sarkisian’s conciliatory policy on the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.

In its latest statement, the HAK likewise accused Sarkisian of seeking to make “equally unacceptable concessions” to Azerbaijan. The bloc repeated its claims that the only way to thwart “this anti-national process” is for Armenia’s leading political groups to form an anti-government coalition and force Sarkisian into resignation.

Zurabian made clear that the HAK has no plans to join a newly formed grouping of a dozen opposition parties led by the Armenian Revolutionary Federation (Dashnaktsutyun) which was formed earlier this month to fight against the implementation of the Turkish-Armenian accord. He claimed that Dashnaktsutyun maintains close ties with the government, arguing that it is still not seeking Sarkisian’s resignation despite its harsh criticism of his policy on Turkey.

Dashnaktsutyun leaders have said that they will fight for “regime change” in the country only if they fail to prevent the protocols’ ratification by Armenia’s parliament.

Davutoglu Reveals Ankara’s Steps if Obama Uses The Term Genocide

March 10, 2010

Turkey’s Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu had a meeting with Turkish Ambassador to the US Namik Tan, who was recalled to Ankara following the endorsement of the Armenian Genocide Resolution by the US House Foreign Relations Committee.

According to the Turkish Stargazete, Davutoglu-Tan discussed Ankara’s further steps providing US President Barack Obama uses “Genocide” in his April 24 speech.

Thus, providing Obama uses “Genocide”, Ankara will freeze $1,2 billion deal on F-35 fighter jet and 14 CH-47 Chinook helicopter, as well as Patriot Missile sale talks. Ankara will also limit the support to the US over Iran and Afghanistan.

Turkey Urges Obama To Block Armenian Genocide Bill

March 5, 2010

Just hours after recalling its ambassador to Washington, Turkey urged the U.S. government on Friday to thwart further progress of a draft congressional resolution that describes the mass killings and deportations of Armenians by Ottoman forces as genocide.

Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu also warned President Barack Obama against using the word “genocide” in a statement on the issue expected next month. “We expect Obama not to perpetuate or exaggerate this crisis in April,” Davutoglu was reported to say, reiterating Ankara’s strong condemnation of the resolution’s approval by the Foreign Affairs Committee of the U.S. House of Representatives.

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, meanwhile, indicated that the Obama administration will try to block the resolution’s passage by the full House. In that regard, she downplayed its endorsement by the House panel.

Azerbaijan May Recall its Ambassador From Washington

March 5, 2010

The Azerbaijani Presidential Administration categorically condemned the adoption of the resolution recognizing the Armenian genocide by the U.S. House of Representatives Foreign Affairs Committee.

Such step by the U.S congressmen is mistaken and unfair, Azerbaijani Presidential Administration Socio-Political Department Head Ali Hasanov told reporters.

Hasanov said the Azerbaijani government condemns this step by the U.S. congressmen, and brings to attention that this decision was unilateral, unjust, pro-Armenian and anti-Turk in spirit. “We believe this decision also does not correlate strongly with the interests of the United States and the American people, and seriously damages the international image of this country,” he said.

Hillary Clinton Says HR252 Affirming The Armenian Genocide Should Not Proceed

March 5, 2010

Immediately following Thursday’s dramatic House Foreign Affairs Committee vote approving House Resolution 252 affirming the Armenian Genocide, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said the resolution should go no further.

While on a tour of Latin America, Clinton said from Costa Rica that the Obama administration has made its intentions clear:

“We do not believe that the full Congress will or should vote on that resolution and we have made that clear to all the parties involved,” Clinton said.

A day earlier, prior to the Committee vote, Clinton had urged Committee Chairman Howard Berman – a 27-year veteran congressman from California – not to bring the resolution to a vote, as had been scheduled since last month. Berman (a cosponsor of HR252), denied the Secretary’s appeal, leading to the narrow (23-22) approval.

US Aerospace and Defense Industry Say Armenian Genocide Resolution Would Hurt Trade With Turkey

March 4, 2010

The US aerospace and defence industry is urging House of Representatives lawmakers to reject a measure that would call a World War One-era massacre of Armenians by Turkish forces genocide, warning it could jeopardize US exports to Turkey.

The chief executives of Lockheed Martin Corp, Boeing Co, Raytheon Co, United Technologies Corp and Northrop Grumman Corp issued a rare joint letter, warning that passage of the measure by the House Foreign Affairs Committee could lead to “a rupture in U.S.-Turkey relations” and put American jobs at risk.

“Alienating a significant NATO ally and trading partner would have negative repercussions for US geopolitical interests and efforts to boost both exports and employments,” the CEOs warned in a Feb. 26 letter to the committee’s Democratic chairman, Representative Howard Berman.
